Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the hit program reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Audience Reaction
One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
