Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

The tournament indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to take part in an Australian Open main draw, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

In the final days of December, Williams wed Denmark-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
