UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman containing several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
