During the morning, thousands of mourners temporarily invaded Nairobi's international airport, disrupting a formal proceeding where President William Ruto and other officials were receiving Odinga's body with formal recognition.

This incident prompted a temporary halt of aviation services.

Assemblies also overwhelmed adjacent streets and tried to enter parliament, where the administration had originally scheduled the community homage.

National Legacy and Ethnic Support

Though mainly known as an opposition figure, Odinga became senior minister in 2008 and also formed a political pact with the leader last year in a career marked by shifting alliances.

He commanded strong loyalty among followers, especially in his cultural background based in western Kenya, many of whom contend he was deprived of the presidency by election irregularities.

Many of Odinga's supporters, who were not yet born in 1991 when Kenya became a multi-party democracy, paid tribute to Odinga's contributions as an activist.
