As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Alarming Air Quality Levels

Several parts of the capital registered an pollution measurement above 500, which represents 10x the safe threshold established by the WHO.

In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable levels.

Firecracker Restrictions and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the dangerous haze that covers the metropolis as the cold season begins.

However in recent months, the recently formed regional leadership petitioned the highest court to request a relaxation of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Judicial Decision and Enforcement

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judges approved the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited periods throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the regulated periods across the city, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Many air quality sensors throughout Delhi registered air quality spiking around late evening to the most severe levels seen during the festival in at least three years.

International Effects

The proliferation of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants traveling from India following the festivities.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the capital have remained as a serious issue for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particles in the environment has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the peak records ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted urban center.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

The problem in the city is resulting from a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from farm burning in neighbouring areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air descends.

Public Health and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the capital region is enormous, according to various investigations.

This pollution leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 early mortalities per year in the city.
