A popular South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Police said the 40-year-old media personality was confronted by three individuals, one of whom shot at him before escaping on foot.

The reason behind the incident has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, police said.

How It Happened

Authorities revealed that Stock was attacked as he was departing from a location in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the building managing the setup of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, it was reported.

"The report indicates the victim was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," a police statement said.

Surveillance tape showed a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what looked like a security uniform firing shots on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but collapsed a short distance away.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the attack.

Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were discovered at the location.

Call for Public Assistance

Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have have information to contact them.

"We know they traveled on foot after the shooting, and police have been attempting to locate them to find their whereabouts," added an official.

A Nation in Mourning

His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.

"I am in shock. I am shattered," were her words.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about subjects not many people were prepared to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the public to not sharing disturbing footage from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's young family.

Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that aired on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.

Beyond his work in broadcasting, Stock was involved in various commercial activities, including private security, supplying high-level security services and managing safety for prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
