The convicted plotter – who had been living under home confinement in his residence while a number of legal procedures and challenges unfold – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the next few days, amid growing talk that he will be moved to a infamous high-security penitentiary.

Past Comments on Prisoners

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the far-right former paratrooper exhibited little mercy for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we offer those dirtbags a good life?” he once pondered. “They should just get fucked, period. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to end up there, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”

Jail Destination Debate

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has horrified backers, several of whom this week inspected the complex in an apparent effort to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, claimed he expected the elderly figure to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal issues – the consequence of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His health is very grave. He will not be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells holding forty prisoners: “That’s almost one square meter per inmate.

“We talked to the inmates and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the horrible meals,” added the senator.

“It is an injustice that eats away the spirits of many of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.

But his predicted jailing has also warmed the spirits of many others who think he deserves to be jailed for conspiring to prevent the incoming president from becoming president – and additionally plotting to have him murdered.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the current leader's allied group, commented: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. No one wants Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. No one wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to receive proper handling – but proper treatment in prison. He must not carry on being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years praising the tough conditions of convicts, had suddenly realized to their privileges. “Recently has the far-right – which has consistently claimed that basic rights were not for offenders – chosen to tour a prison to discover what circumstances are really like,” he remarked.

“He is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, insulting handling”.

Potential Prison Facilities
