Boxing is experiencing a significant decline this season, with a scarcity of big events and far less thrilling fights than usual. The possibility of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight contest between Parker and Wardley at the O₂ Arena provides some solace to the challenged industry. This is the 40th contest for Parker and, excluding three defeats, he has been dropped multiple times by multiple challengers. He consistently rises but Wardley punches with greater force than any opponent he's encountered – with the omission of Wilder who seemed a shadow of a power puncher when Parker achieved a one-sided points victory in December 2023.

Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only started boxing when he was 20 years old, had no amateur boxing history and has always had to overcome questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is also on the verge to a world title challenge.

“This is the biggest bout, currently, in the heavyweight category. These two boxers have taken a risk when neither fighter had to agree to this match. Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have already ordered the champion to fight him, but he was injured. Joseph insists on fighting.

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the pair of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my professional life and the biggest fight of my life. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I rise to the occasion. Saturday will be no different. The separation between Parker's status and where people think I am has been a frequent topic during my entire career.

“He has vast experience for a long time, with a numerous contests on his resume. Certainly not is he an senior boxer but he has been in the game for a long time and had some heavy fights. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a lot more of those fights than I have.”

But the general belief is that Parker will be too seasoned, and too technically proficient, for Wardley. He is expected to triumph a hard-fought contest with the confidence that he is the prime candidate for Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a clear gap.
