The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
