Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police released security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
