Israeli citizens mark second remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace negotiations advance
Israelis have assembled around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled official remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still took place across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to review the terms of the agreement.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The official explained the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the deal.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are working hard to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
- Future management of the region
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No location feels like home any longer and until every captive come back no one will be secure."
"After we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Activist a participant remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the hostilities to finish in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the music event, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli shelling persisted.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, area and locality districts and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"Once the dusk arrives, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.
"We are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, clinging, particularly my little child who puts his head on me all night."
"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had accepted the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
A different healthcare center in the south region of that area indicated additional dead people had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the south region, medics stated.
