Bullish Wilfried Nancy shows no fear of being fired but the Parkhead faithful display anger after derby defeat.
The under-pressure manager stated he had no concerns about dismissal, claiming, “I believe we are extremely close to a turnaround,” despite edging perilously close to being fired with a comprehensive loss to Rangers.
A Second-Half Capitulation Results in Derby Loss
Celtic were ahead the visitors at half-time but a second-half capitulation enabled the Gers to pull level on points with the reigning league title holders. The French coach, who was appointed from the MLS, has now overseen six setbacks in his first eight games.
“There is unity with the board,” stated Nancy.
Questioned about his own future, he responded: “I don’t think about it. My focus is on discovering solutions to aid my players to excel on small moments.
Fan Fury Erupts
Celtic’s support made their feelings clear – towards the board and manager – in their hundreds at Parkhead. The board are reportedly likely to return to the interim manager, who enjoyed a successful temporary stint previously, if Nancy departs.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. That is the truth for the moment. But when I say this is the reality, it doesn’t mean that I am pessimistic. Absolutely not. What I mean we are on the cusp, really, really close to change the narrative.”
Nancy’s Persistent Belief
He continues to cling to the fact the side can perform strongly for one half at a time. For instance, if not for missed chances they could have been better than 1-0 up. “The performance had merit except the fact that we haven’t scored our chances,” he said. “I acknowledge that we lost, but it's important to stay objective.
“The level we had at stages was of top quality. That is a fact. I wouldn't talk like that if it was different. But that’s why, in terms of results, I noted it's a repeating pattern. That’s why I feel a change is coming to things turning around. Right now: small things.”
“I saw plenty of positives that we did, as was the case today. However comes down to consistency. My message would change the same. That’s why I firmly believe we’re going to be able to turn things around.”
Opposition Reaction Outlook
Danny Röhl refused to contemplate a championship push despite what appeared to be a statement victory. “One match at a time, then we can gradually build momentum,” he said. “The belief in the team is outstanding.”
