The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
