Administration Announces Federal Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.
Official Announcement and Early Information
Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.
Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.
Union Response and Legal Challenges
Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.
This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
The AFL-CIO responded to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved before then.
At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Last week, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.
An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to conduct terminations, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.
Consequences for Employees
The layoffs took place on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but excluding the beginning of October, since funding lapsed at the start of the month.
Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.
“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
