A Pair of Cuba-bound Aid Vessels Declared Unaccounted For subsequent to Leaving Mexico.
A large-scale search and recovery mission is presently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated boats carrying aid cargo traveling from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Military Search Operations Launched
Mexico has dispatched naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were carrying at least 9 crew members, according to a military release.
The boats had been scheduled to arrive in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the navy said.
Background of Aid to Cuba
The Caribbean nation has leaned on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with widespread power outages across the country.
"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with suitable safety systems and signalling equipment," a representative associated with the mission commented.
The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Earlier Aid Shipment
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.
That ship, called "a modern Granma" in reference to the vessel in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Wider International Context
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the island nation began.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50,000 surgical procedures called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with statements from several officials underscoring the delicate nature of diplomatic ties.
Responding to certain statements, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The maritime authorities said it was committed to using every available asset at its reach to find the vessels and secure the safety of the people on board.
To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
